Wirewright — Aseprite for AI agents (MCP server, headless)
A downloadable tool
Aseprite, as tools for your coding agent. With the editor closed.
Wirewright is an MCP server: add it to Claude Code, OpenAI Codex or Cursor and your agent can make and edit sprites, animations, sprite sheets and tilesets in Aseprite. Every call runs Aseprite in batch mode (aseprite -b), so it works with no window open, over SSH and in CI.
Why it is different
- Headless by default. No editor to keep open, no clicking. Multi-step edits, layers, frames, tags and undo all work between calls.
- The agent sees its work. Tools that change pixels return a preview image, so the model checks its drawing before the next step.
- Replayable. Save a session as a JSON job file and rebuild the exact same sprite later with one command, or with plain Aseprite in CI. A content digest proves nothing drifted.
- It knows tiles. Built-in Tilewright tools turn a 3x3 terrain template into Blob-47, Wang-16 or RPG Maker A2 tilesets, build 9-slice UI frames at any size, and export Tiled
.tsx, Godot 4.tres(with terrains),manifest.jsonand RPG Maker MZ sheets. - Pixel-exact. Lines, rectangles, ellipses, fills and outlines are computed pixel by pixel; your brush settings never change the result.
What's inside
- 44 tools: sprites, layers, frames, cels, tags, slices, drawing (pixel rows, lines, rects, ellipses, flood fill, outline, paste), palettes (load, snap, hue-shifted ramps, usage), exports (PNG, sprite sheet + Aseprite JSON, GIF, one file per tag or per layer), job files, undo/redo
- A Claude Code skill that teaches "pixel art as code"
- Ten CC0 palettes (PICO-8 and nine by Paleto)
- Setup for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor; a five-minute quickstart that ends with a sprite sheet
- Live editor bridge (beta): an Aseprite extension that lets the same tools act on the sprite open in your editor, one undo step per call
Requirements
Aseprite 1.3 or newer (Steam or aseprite.org) and Node.js 18 or newer. Tested on macOS (Apple Silicon) with Aseprite 1.3.18. Windows and Linux are supported in the code but untested in 1.0.
Honest notes
- Wirewright does not generate art. It has no image model; it places the pixels your agent asks for. How good the sprite is depends on the agent and on you.
- The live editor bridge is beta: it is tested headless and against a mock, but the final link inside the running editor is checked by hand.
- Draws on image layers; tilemap layers and Aseprite's brushes/inks are not driven in 1.0.
Licence
Personal and commercial use, unlimited projects; everything you make is yours. Please don't redistribute Wirewright itself. Not affiliated with Igara Studio (Aseprite).
Wirewright's code was written with a large language model and tested headless against real Aseprite.
